An innovative and revolutionary solution for off-grid electricity turned global attention to Brunei Darussalam as it took the centre stage at the 36th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) Gala Dinner by winning the ASEAN Energy Awards 2018 under the Renewable Energy (RE) project competition. Brunei Darussalam won first place under 'Off-Grid' category with a project titled "2 kWp Off-grid Solar PV System in Labi, Ulu-Belait, Brunei Darussalam", while Thailand won 2nd and 3rd place under the same category.
The prestigious ASEAN Energy Awards generally seek sustainable projects that exhibits originality, market-based solutions, environmental benefits and significant socio-economic contributions. Launched in 2000 by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), the ASEAN Energy Awards is the region's highest recognition of efforts in energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy management.
The project owner, Mr. Philip Chin Khee Khiong of Pan-El Electrical & Engineering Sdn Bhd, installed the PV system at one of the dwellings in the remote area of Labi back in 2013. The house is owned by Mr Tin Thien Siew, a visually impaired elderly man who lives by himself. According to Mr Tin, since the solar PV was installed, he never felt lonely staying in Labi anymore, and he could never thank the project initiators enough for their contribution. The Solar PV system managed to produce about 2,620 kWh of electricity per year and can avoid about 3,668 kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The accolade was presented by Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi, the ASEAN Secretary General, during the Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the 36th ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Singapore. Receiving the award was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Amrinal bin Haji Amir of Pan-El Electrical & Engineering Sdn Bhd. Also present at that the Gala Dinner was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry.
