Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy attended the graduation ceremony of the Offshore Reliability and Maintenance Contract (ORMC) Welding School on 12th February 2020 at the Marine Construction Yard in Kuala Belait. The ceremony saw ORMC's Welding School's first batch of seven local students to complete welder training programme. Also in attendance was Dr. Ceri Powell, Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd (BSP).

Initiated by BSP and developed by Aker Solutions Sdn. Bhd, the program aims to produce industry qualified welders through the combination of classroom theory, personalised practical training and on-the-job performance evaluations. Upon completion of the programme, these welders are now qualified in accordance to international standards.

In her welcoming remarks, Dr Ceri said that the collaboration between BSP and Aker is part of their joint commitment towards Wawasan Brunei 2035, to produce highly skilled Bruneians qualified to international standards. It is aligned with the country's vision to produce 'industry-ready' graduates who are ready to take on real-world experiences. The programme has been designed to ensure that the students gain practical knowledge that will kick-start their career.

During the event, the Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy presented the students with their International Standards Qualifications and Graduation Certificates.

The BSP ORMC Hazard Hunt facility was also launched by the Guest of Honour during the ceremony. The learning facility is an initiative to support the company's continuous efforts to ensure that safety is always a top priority for its employees and business partners. The facility is one of a number of innovations being used at BSP to counter 'risk normalisation' at sites and maintain a safe working environment.

Guests had the opportunity to tour the ORMC Welding School and hear first-hand from the students about their experience completing the programme, as well as a visit to the Hazard Hunt facility.
