02-Oct-2019 : Acting Minister Officiates the Opening Ceremony of the Student Solar Ambassador Workshop

Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Acting Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry officiated the opening ceremony of the "Student Solar Ambassador Workshop" as the Guest of Honour on 2nd October 2019. Jointly organized by Kemuda Institute Sdn. Bhd and CIC Environmental Services Sdn. Bhd and High Commission of India to Brunei Darussalam, the event was held at the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The workshop aims to target 500 students from 10 schools in Brunei Darussalam to become solar ambassadors.

Also in attendance during the opening ceremony were Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Ash'ari, Legislative Council Member and Director of Green Brunei; Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy and Power), Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry; His Excellency Ajaneesh Kumar, High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Md. Taib, Acting Vice Chancellor of UTB and Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Razak bin Haji Mohammad, Chairman of Kemuda Institute.

The main objective of the workshop is to increase awareness among the participants on the applications of renewable energy technologies and its positive impact to the environment. The event started with the recitation of Doa Selamat, followed by a welcoming remarks by Ms. Loo Mei Tim, Acting Managing Director of Kemuda Institute. In her welcoming remarks, she highlighted that the workshop enables students to learn about solar energy. She added that the workshop is part of Kemuda Institute's effort to give back to the community and help rekindle one's interest in learning.

A panel discussion entitled "Making Energy Sustainable: Seizing Opportunities in Renewable Energy" was conducted during the workshop. The panelists explore insights on the partnership between public, private and education sector in promoting sustainable lifestyle through renewable energy applications. The aims of the panel discussion were to encourage critical thinking and innovation among the youths.

The panelists include Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Ash'ari, Legislative Council Member and Director of Green Brunei; Yang Mulia Dayang Dr. Hajah Roslynna binti Haji Rosli, Deputy Director of Tri-Ced of UTB; Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Matiin bin Haji Md. Kasim, Head of Renewable Energy of MEMI and Mr. Daniel Wong, Managing Director of CIC Environment Services Sdn. Bhd.

At the end of the workshop, the Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Acting Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry presented certificates of completion and participation to the participants. During the ceremony, two officers from the Sustainable Energy Division, Md Asrul Sany bin Hj Md Ali and Shaikh Faiz bin Shaikh Hj Fadilah, were awarded with the SoULS Master Trainer Certification during the event.

An exhibition was also organized as part of the event. The Ministry through Brunei Climate Change Secretariat and Sustainable Energy Division have also participated in the exhibition to showcase the ongoing initiatives and programmes related to Renewable Energy and Climate Change mitigation measures. This is in line with the Ministry's effort to facilitate Renewable Energy policies to increase the widespread use of renewable energy technologies in Brunei Darussalam as well as to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate Brunei Darussalam's climate change policies, strategies and action plans.

The Student Solar Ambassador Workshop is a global event originated from the Indian Institute of Technology under one of its flagship programme, Solar Urja through Localization for Sustainability (SoULS). SoULS programme aims to promote a complete, cost-effective, reliable and sustainable solar energy access while protecting the environment, creating livelihood and empowering locals.  In line with this vision, Kemuda Institute and CIC Environmental Services Sdn Bhd took the opportunity to organize the workshop as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
